Streamify: Mobile App

Case Study

Team & Role

Timeline: ~3 Weeks
Scope: To complete, from research to development a hypothetical experience of our choosing.

The team consisted of three individuals (including myself) that attended Georgia Tech’s UX/UI Boot Camp. We were given the task to design ANYTHING, so we landed on a streaming service consolidation app.

  • Jonathan Kaplan: UX Researcher, UX Design, Usability Testing, Information Architecture, Front-end Development
  • Nile Ruf: UX Design, Style Guide, Hi-Fidelity Prototype
  • Allison Krupp: UX Researcher, UX Design, UI Design (Hand in almost every aspect)

Note: This entire project was highly collaborative and no process went unchecked by teammates.

Problem

How long do you spend trying to find something to watch on Netflix or other streaming services?

How enjoyable is that process?

Our Process

The process we used is cyclical and iterative. Every step within the below diagram is a general framework. Steps were revisited and re-addressed as needed.

Research

Competitive Analysis

  • Conducted an analysis of other streaming consolidation apps to see what we might be competing with.

Heuristic Evaluation

  • Analyzed the functionality and features  of existing apps to ensure proof of concept, market viability, and how to improve upon our competition.

Interview Insights

n=5

  • 100% of respondents find it difficult to know what platform content is on
  • 80% of respondents decide what to watch with other people present
  • 80% of respondents decide what to watch based on word of mouth
  • 60% of respondents want to know if the movie/show will be worth their time

Survey Insights

n=146

  • All screens are used to a significant degree
  • Normal curve helps reinforce our claim that there is a problem present in streaming platforms
  • Of 146 respondents, only 6 people don’t subscribe to streaming platforms (95.9%)
    • (national avg: 62%)

More Survey Data:

  • 26.6% of responses indicated that word-of-mouth is a priority decision maker.

  • 25% of responses indicated content saturation issues, or indecisiveness.

  • 12.2% of responses indicate there isn’t anything “good” to watch.

  • 15.2% of responses indicated issues with first party apps (Organization, content shown, etc.)

  • 7.3% of responses suggested a universal streaming platform (proof of concept)

Persona

Madison Smith is indicative of the majority of streaming service users: A female millennial with a stable career and time to indulge in watching movies and shows frequently – with friends often – but not so much time that she can spend forever deciding what to watch.

Information Architecture

Card Sorting

Used card sorting in a more creative way for Streamify. We were struggling to figure out the best order for categories on the home screen. What better way to organize categories than to card sort?

We sent out surveys with the goal of understanding the general desired hierarchy and preferences for content within streaming platforms

Task Flow

Task flow decided based on storyboard/UX scenarios

Prototypes

Testing

  • All users struggled with customizing the home screen (dashboard) and had difficulty adding & moving categories

  • User suggested changing “Saved” to “Watchlist”

  • User did not know when signing up that the app connects with friends

  • User said that the search could be faster and the task they were given was not reflective of the average user

Style Guide

High Fidelity Prototype

See all of the content available to you. Organize it how you want. Streamify is streaming, simplified.

More suggestions, better suggestions, that are of interest and relevance to you.

Better search and filter options to find what you are looking for faster

See what your friends are watching, or don’t. The choice is yours.

Outcomes

  • User surveys were not designed for 146 participants, and as such, the data was more ambiguous than it should be

  • More usability testing would always be welcome

What we learned

  • Streaming will continue to grow

  • There is a need for a better solution than what is currently on the market

  • We are not the user… yet?
